What’s With The Low Self Image In Tween Shows?

How come all the average or geeky or supposed not beautiful people in television, or more specifically in tween TV shows are actually above average looks wise.  Basically the 425.hannah.montana.052308“non-beautiful” people are beautiful.   I was watching this show with my kids on Disney channel and these two “average” girls were talking about this ‘model” girl and how beautiful and perfect she was (and they weren’t) when in actuality they were both impeccably groomed, well dressed in stylish clothing and beautiful and thin and in real life would probably be considered above average beauty.  I wonder if subconsciously young girls see those beautiful girls pick themselves apart as not being beautiful and perfect (when in really they are stunning) that they see that even beautiful people aren’t beautiful enough or worthy of low self-image?  Then how are non actors supposed to feel about themselves when these actors aren’t the beautiful ones?  How are they supposed to begin to measure up… seems to be counterproductive and catty and really, what’s the point?

Dear writers of tween shows: please do better.

  1. I couldn’t agree more. I recently read that Seventeen Magazine has promised among other things to stop airbrushing the models. One step in the right direction, finally.

    • that’s good.. airbrushing has gotten so out of hand, that the models don’t even look human, their bodies without one natural crease or freckle look plastic and awkward.

  2. There are some shows on Disney I now wont let my kids watch. The sexism is horrible – to quote the lead male on one of their shows “Girls can’t be smart and hot.” Needless to say he was interested in a dumb blond (this girl wasn’t just dumb – but really really dumb). It’s embarrassing for Disney to produce such crap. There are always going to be stereotypes to play with but the writers have to be smart and realize that young girls aim to be more than moronic beauties, , actresses or rock stars. I’m so sick of it. Thanks for your post, I’m glad I’m not the only one this bothers.

  3. well said, Ive banned my 10 year old niece from watching that crud on TV when she visits 😉

  4. I really like reading through an article that will make people think.
Also, thanks for allowing for me to comment!
